Right about now, home gardeners are finally getting to enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of their labors as they harvest what they planted earlier this year. But these salad-days dreams had their start back in the winter with the arrival of a seed catalogue. Throughout our region and all around the country, that catalogue is often from Burpee, a Doylestown-based company founded in 1876. Today, millions of gardeners pore over its pages and the promise of warmer days to come. This cover fronted the 1945 catalogue, but tomatoes, beans, beets, carrots and chard are still mainstays of summer vegetable garden—and the star ingredients at restaurants this time of year, too. Do you want in on the ultimate in local food (your own garden) for next year? Request a catalogue at burpee.com.
