For the past 80 years, Anastasi Seafood has been an Italian Market mainstay. Every year, as the family prepares for those frantic days that lead up to Christmas Eve and “Feast of the Seven Fishes” dinners all over the region, Janet Anastasi Stechman’s thoughts turn to her many years behind the fish counter. This photo, taken of her grandmother in 1979, recalls the store’s long past.

Today the space looks very different with its modern bar and happy hour, but it remains a vital stop for Christmas Eve preparations. Crowds flood the store to wait for prepared foods like crab cakes or popular ingredients like eel. “All the various fish mean something, either religious or more mystical. Eels are a tradition because they are supposed to bring a year of virility for men,” says Stechman.
